IN 2004 , a group of teenagers started a grassroots effort to bring a top professional wakeboarder to South Carolina. The effort was a success, and the group dubbed “The Rough Riders” hosted two world famous wakeboard athletes for a weekend on Lake Murray.
Now, sixteen years later, those teenagers have grown up (somewhat) but they’re still known as the SC Rough Riders. Their weekend on the lake has become the largest annual gathering of spectators and wakeboarders in the Southeast, now known as Weekend With the Pros. Every summer, this event brings lessons with pro wakeboarders, riding exhibitions, in-water boat demos, and a huge boat raft up to Lake Murray. Year after year, their mission remains the same—provide a great family friendly experience connecting our state with the watersports lifestyle.
Just 45 minutes up the road from Aiken in Leesville, South Carolina, Weekend With the Pros draws riders and wakeboard enthusiasts from around the state for just one weekend each June, but it instills a love of watersports that lasts a lifetime. Plan a day trip this summer to spend the day on Lake Murray and catch the Wakeboard Exhibition or purchase a lesson for yourself (or your child!) to learn how to wakeboard from a pro.
